Trying Cook My Grub

As many of you know, I live in Maidenhead, Berkshire and I’m all about supporting my local businesses. In fact there are so many amazing businesses in the area – and many of them actually started up during lockdown.
I enjoy finding out about them and why they do what they do. I’ve also seen how food businesses have adapted to meet the needs of the consumer – and food is not going anywhere!
During the lockdown period, we’ve all felt fed up and bored of cooking. Getting someone else to cook and bring us our food is a treat we can all appreciate. It’s something to look forward to when there isn’t a lot happening in our social lives.
Before, as a family, we didn’t really order takeout much. Mainly because my husband has food intolerances which can limit what we choose. Takeaway also has connotations of being unhealthy and full of processed food. But things are definitely changing.
New Business
Cook My Grub is a newly launched business based in Maidenhead, founded by Shabbir Mookhtiar and Dinesh Patil. They decided to create a new service for the area, connecting home chefs with foodies. As parents of a young family, it was a struggle to find the time to cook fresh food at home. They also didn’t want to rely on takeaways and frozen food, so they set up this online marketplace. It has already expanded out to Windsor, Slough, Marlow and Bourne End.
How Cook My Grub Works
When I came across Cook My Grub, I was certainly intrigued by how it works. You simply download the app and you choose the food you’d like to order. There are a selection of local independent chefs who can offer a range of authentic home cooked meals straight to your door. You’ll be able to see the days you can order on and the times they will be delivered from.
Each chef on the Cook My Grub app are either professionals or new businesses that have undergone allergy awareness courses and have their food hygiene certificates. They operate in the same way as they would if they worked in a restaurant, and are therefore registered with the council and have regular inspections.
They cook freshly prepared meals and deliver them to you. You can track your order via the app and you can receive text messages to let you know when it’s on it’s way. The message even tells you how long it will be.
What Food Can I Order?
Some of the popular Maidenhead chefs include: Gio’s Kitchen (who cooks South African and Italian dishes), Punjabi Dhaba (North Indian dishes), Mumbai Tadka (Bombay style food) and San Diego Kitchen (Mexican/American).
We chose a dish from Gio’s Kitchen and it was cooked to perfection. I was able to make the chef aware of my husband’s food intolerances – which include dairy and soya and that was catered for. We had ‘Bunny Chow’, which is a South African dish of slow cooked lamb curry (there was a vegetarian option) served inside hollowed out bread.
The order was to be delivered after 6pm, and it arrived on time. I was able to track when it was being prepared and sent out for delivery via the app. Then a text message came through to let me know it was 6 minutes away! We were sitting down for dinner just after 6pm.
The menus are updated regularly, but you can take a look on the app to see what is available.
